Tuesday, October 14th

Wow we have been very busy these past few weeks learning many new things. We have now been doing Daily 5 on our own and are doing a great job at making choices. You might have also noticed your child has been bringing home math packets. This is the work that they complete during math centers. Its important that you are having conversations with them about their work and what they are doing in class.

In phonics we have started working on letter sounds and matching pictures to that sound. We also continue to work on letter ID as well as letter writing. We just finished learning how to write all of our letters, so your child will be bringing home their ABC book soon.

In writing we now know what a writer does, who a writer is, and what a writer uses. We have been writing daily and putting our worker in our writing binders. At this time we like to see that the students can draw a picture that matches what they are telling us. We also work on coloring in the lines, filling in white spaces, and using the appropriate colors for what we are drawing.

During math centers are focus for all of the groups is number ID and writing along with patterns and shapes. Your child is practicing this through many different activities and games. They seem to really enjoy math centers!

If you have not already done so, please turn in your field trip money and signed forms asap.

Sight Words we have learned: I, a, the, we, go, like, will, mom, dad, red, blue, see, to

Friday, September 19th

Progress reports sent home today!

At this point your child should be able to write and recognize their name. Count to 30 by ones, identify 11 numbers, and 26 letters. If your child is not able to do this it is very important that you are working with them at home as well.

We have being working very hard learning about daily five and all the choices we will be able to make. Your child now knows what read to self, read to someone, listening to reading, word work, and work on writing looks like and what their job is. We will be starting daily five very soon!

We launched Writers Workshop this week. We talked about three ways to tell a story, which are: use spoken words, draw a picture, write words and sentences. This week we practiced telling a story using our spoken words. We will spend the next several weeks using pictures to tell stories.

We finished number writing today and will start math centers on Monday. These worked very well last year and allowed students to work at their own level and pace. We have heard great things from the 1st grade teachers already!

We are still working on a letter a day and will be finishing this up with in the next few weeks.  Your child should be able to read and recognize the following words: I, a, go, we, see. On Monday I will be sending home our kindergarten words broken up into which quarter we introduce them.

Grandparents Day Tip: Have them arrive a little before 9:00 to get pictures taken.

Have a wonderful weekend. RDP!

Friday, September 5th

Wow we have been very busy this week learning many new things in class. We just finished up our first round of stations and the students did a very nice job with it. Stations teaches them to not only work in a group but to also be an independent thinker and worker.

During our Literacy block we are continuing to learn and practice Daily 5. Your child has practiced how to read to self and how to read to someone. They also know the three ways to read a book. Be sure to ask them about this and you will be amazed at what their minds are learning already! We started the week by listening to Brown Bear, Brown Bear and reading it as a whole class. We then continued to do different color word, sorting, and counting activities that go along with the book. In Writer's Workshop we did our second author study. This week we read 4 different books by Eric Carle. The students really enjoyed his colorful and silly books. We are also starting to look at letters and how they are formed. We will be doing different types of letter sorts through out next week.

In math we are still practicing number ID and number writing. Be sure to keep practicing this at home.

We are still learning a new letter everyday and how to write it. These pages will be made into an ABC Book that will be sent home when we finish all our letters. Next week I will be assessing your child over number and letter ID, so keep working with them.

By this point your child should be adjusting to being in school all day and able to follow our classroom procedures. They should also be able to recognize and write their first name.

Have a great weekend and Go Red Devils!!!

Welcome To Room 1

I hope your child has enjoyed their first two weeks of school! We have spent a lot of time working and learning on classroom rules and procedures. Your child should now be adjusting to the classroom and our procedures. We have been learning the correct way to write our name and we have also been learning how to read our classmates name.

We are starting to learn about daily five and have been practicing how to read to self. We have made a counting coconut book and have been learning each day how to write one letter from the Alphabet.

We spent this week along with the next two doing an author study. This week we read books by Karma Wilson and then we made a noticing chart on things that are the same in all four books. Be sure to ask your child about the bear books and what they noticed!

We will be spending the next week or so working on correct number writing. Please also be practicing this at home. Please continue to work with your child on number ID, and letter ID as well. This is something I will be assessing soon for progress reports.

Have a fun and safe Labor Weekend! No school Monday
